I have been seeing a lot of recipes the past few month involving baking candy bars and chocolates into brownies, cakes, and cookies. I was in need of a “quick treat” this week, so I though I would give one of these ideas a try. Now I have never been a real big candy bar kind of guy, I much prefer a slice of cake, pie or any other home made treat, but I found the idea interesting. I decided upon using Kit Kat bars in a batch of brownies. I thought a layer of the chocolate and wafer crunch might make a nice addition to the brownies, and with white icing and red sugar, they would become a Valentine treat too.
The brownies turned out very gooey and rich with an amazing chocolate flavor, however the layer of wafers did not work quite as I would have expected. The Kit Kat bars did not keep the texture I was hoping for, rather ending up somewhere between crisp and soft. Overall the brownies were quite good, but I think if I were to make them another time, I would chop up the candy bars instead of using them whole. The brownies did bring big smiles to those who received them, and they all disappeared quickly. Maybe my expectations were too great, or more likely it was the fact that I am just not all that crazy about candy bars.
Delicious brownies with a layer of Kit Kat candy bars baked in for added goodness.
- 1 package brownie mix
- 6 Kit Kat candy bars regular size
- 1 can prepared frosting chocolate of vanilla
- sanding sugar optional
-
Heat oven to the temperature indicated on the package of brownie mix.
-
Prepare an 8″ x 8″ square pan with butter or cooking spray.
-
Tip: Line the pan with parchment paper and lightly coat with butter or spray. I like this method for brownies and bars. After baking and cooling I remove the bars from the pan by lifting with the paper.
-
Make the brownie batter following the instructions on the box.
-
Pour half of the batter into the parchment lined pan.
-
Arrange a layer of Kit Kat bars over the batter, then cover with the remaining batter.
-
Bake the brownies according to the instructions on the box.
-
Place on a wire rack to completely cool.
-
If desired frost and decorate the top of the brownies.
-
Allow the frosting to set up a bit, then lift them out of the pan and cut to serve.
This was a last minute quick treat which I used a brownie mix and canned frosting to pull off. I normally would have made my own batter and icing, however I confess I usually keep a few things in the larder for emergencies like this.
my kitkats Burned!!! :’-(
Sorry to hear that. Might be a good idea to check your oven temp with an oven thermometer. You may need to adjust your heat or time. Hope you try them again, thanks for reading the post.
hmm.. yeah I guess the batter would’ve soaked through while the chocolate melted. they still look really good!
Ilan they were really good, however the texture is what disappointed me most. I would have liked the Kit Kat to have either stayed crunchy, or gone completely soft. Halfway in between the two was a little odd to me. Oh well, everyone managed to enjoy, and I always enjoy a good experiment. I do think breaking them into chunks would allow them to go to the soft ooey gooey side completely.
Kathleen, at my house not every thing I cook turns out good or pretty. That is life, and part of the fun for me it the kitchen. I like to share my honest opinion about the things I make, trying to keep it real for myself and others. Thanks for following along!
Glad someone can admit that not every recipe is as expected. That happens to me, too. I like your idea of breaking up KitKats and stirring them in, but just want you to know they look wonderful as they are, Christopher (or should I say Christoph?).
Sounds interesting! And damn your brownies look good 🙂
