<p>There is nothing quite like fresh baked bread with a meal. Tearing apart a warm roll to dunk in soup, or to mop up that extra gravy on the plate is something I think most of us will agree is simply delightful. So why are oven fresh dinner rolls seemingly only reserved for holidays? Probably the biggest reasons are that making bread seems like too much bother, and most recipes make way too many rolls. I recently came across this dinner roll called Pampushky. Popular in both Russia and the Ukraine, this bun is often served with a Borscht, and is what we might find similar to garlic bread.<span id="more-5052"></span></p>
<p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="5043" data-permalink="https://jamesandeverett.com/2016/02/10/pampushki-ukrainian-dinner-rolls/pampushki_2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_2.jpg?fit=1262%2C1900&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1262,1900" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4.5&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D70s&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1454586897&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;56&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;220&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.003125&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="pampushki_2" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_2.jpg?fit=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_2.jpg?fit=797%2C1200&amp;ssl=1" class="aligncenter wp-image-5043" src="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_2.jpg?resize=583%2C879&#038;ssl=1" alt="pampushki_2" width="583" height="879" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_2.jpg?w=1262&amp;ssl=1 1262w, https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_2.jpg?resize=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1 199w, https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_2.jpg?resize=797%2C1200&amp;ssl=1 797w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px" /></p>
<p>As with any traditional food there seems to be multiple methods of preparation. Some use combinations of whole wheat and rye, others white whole wheat, and some just white bread flour. Several recipes I came across called to turn the dough out on to a well oiled board to knead, a different approach than I am used to. I discovered recipes that instructed to toss the freshly baked buns in the garlic butter, others brushed it on during final baking. The addition of fresh parsley or dill did seem to be common in most recipes. Any and all of these variations sounded great to me, however the thing I found most intriguing about this particular recipe is that it made a small batch of 8 rolls, perfect for one meal.</p>
<p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="5045" data-permalink="https://jamesandeverett.com/2016/02/10/pampushki-ukrainian-dinner-rolls/pampushki_4/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_4.jpg?fit=1262%2C1900&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1262,1900" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4.5&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D70s&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1454589382&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;70&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;220&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.003125&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="pampushki_4" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_4.jpg?fit=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_4.jpg?fit=797%2C1200&amp;ssl=1" class="aligncenter wp-image-5045" src="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_4.jpg?resize=583%2C878&#038;ssl=1" alt="pampushki_4" width="583" height="878" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_4.jpg?w=1262&amp;ssl=1 1262w, https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_4.jpg?resize=199%2C300&amp;ssl=1 199w, https://i0.wp.com/jamesandeverett.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/pampushki_4.jpg?resize=797%2C1200&amp;ssl=1 797w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 583px) 100vw, 583px" /></p>
<p>I have made these rolls multiple times now, experimenting with different flours and kneading techniques. The rolls made with the dark flours and kneaded on the oiled board tended to rise less but produced a very flavorful bun. Rolls baked using white bread flour worked on a lightly dusted board rose more and were lighter as you might expect. So depending on your situation and paring you can easily adjust ingredients for the perfect roll.</p>
<p>I find Pampushky to be simply delicious. The dough itself is quite easy to make, requiring very little effort. Of course like any yeast product there is some time required for rising, but to me that is simple to work around. I start the rolls before I begin with my other dinner preparations, so all I have to do is pop them in the oven at the last minute and&#8230;&#8230;.fresh bread for the table.</p>

<p>Swirls of spicy barbecue, smokey bacon, and tangy cheddar work in harmony to create an unforgettable, taste sensational loaf of bread. The flavors work perfectly along side any of your favorite summer picnic foods. Mop up that extra barbecue sauce with a slice, or replace that ordinary bun to build an amazing burger. BLT&#8217;s and deli sandwiches will never be the same. Top a toasted slice with a poached egg for an out of this world brunch experience. Better make two loaves so you have plenty on hand, this one is sure to be a crowd pleaser.<span id="more-2968"></span><a <p>To me the popover would have to be one of life&#8217;s simplest pleasures. Breaking open the crisp outer crust of one of these warm, cloud-like rolls to discover a soft, custardy, eggy lining is just heaven.</p>
<p><span id="more-2456"></span></p>
<p>The popover is a light hollow roll, the American equivalent of a British Yorkshire pudding. Made with just a few simple ingredients, it is much lighter than a croissant or cinnamon roll, but equally as delicious. While the Brit&#8217;s commonly use their version as a dinner roll to mop up gravy, many American dishes fill the pocket with everything from soup to salad. I prefer the popover for breakfast or brunch, savoring them on their own with perhaps only a smear of butter, a spoon of fresh <a href="https://jamesandeverett.com/2013/04/04/easy-strawberry-jam/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strawberry jam</a>, and a cup of coffee.</p>
